Daily Data Point: Georgia Special Election Looking Grim for the GOP
by Sean Trende

For most of the post-primary polling in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District, Republican Karen Handel held a small but consistent lead over Democrat Jon Ossoff.  It seemed as though Ossoff might have a ceiling for his support.

But following the firing of James Comey, Ossoff’s numbers have improved as President Trump’s approval rating has declined.  Now a new SurveyUSA poll of the district shows Ossoff opening up a 51 percent-44 percent lead.

Of course, it is still a month to Election Day, and if we learned anything from 2016 it is that events can change quickly. Trump’s job approval could improve in the intervening time period.  In the meantime, we’ll get a better take on the state of play in Montana on Thursday.
