Healthcare executives predict no winners under Trump

Thursday, April 20, 2017 A new survey found healthcare executives have a pessimistic view of the healthcare landscape and rising uncertainty about the Trump administration. There was little consensus over when a comprehensive plan might arrive, but in general, the group expects patients will see less insurance coverage, fewer benefits and higher premiums.

The announcement comes as a Kaufman Hall analysis found that healthcare “merger-mania" continued at a breakneck pace in the first quarter of fiscal year 2017.

Orthopedic practice among the first to pursue bundled payments with private payers

Thursday, April 20, 2017 The largest orthopedic private practice group in the country will soon be among the first to offer bundled payments for seven surgical procedures. The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics, with locations in Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland, is currently working to develop seven initial bundles for various orthopedic surgeries, Louis Levitt, M.D., the centers’ vice president, said in an interview with FierceHealthcare.

Startup Alignment Healthcare aims to apply the concepts of a patient-centered medical home to health insurance, building a plan that better coordinates care for patients after discharge. FierceHealthPayer article Linda McGlarigan, R.N., chief nursing officer at Adirondack Health in Saranac Lake, New York, said one of the keys to the system’s success in engaging nurses is that nursing leaders are visible and participate in shared decision-making with nurses. Hospitals & Health Networks interview The mother of one of 10 babies infected by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in an outbreak at UC Irvine Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit says the hospital did not explain that other babies had been affected as well when her son tested positive for the superbug. A UC Irvine spokesman said the hospital “fell short" of its goal to keep the parents fully informed about the MRSA outbreak and their prevention efforts. Los Angeles Times article
